On to radiation...

Mom starts her first radiation treatment on Monday at Roseburg Cancer Center. (December 29) The radiation will be on her brain tumors. If that treatment is successful, she will undergo a chemotherapy regimen for the rest of her cancer. She has decided to stay in Roseburg for treatment so that she can stay at home and not have to travel.

Christmas was low key and quiet. We spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day together and just enjoyed being together as a family. Lots of company popped in and out and lots of phone calls! It seems that everyone brought a treat! I think we have all put on some winter weight in preparation for Mom's treatment. Thanks to all of our friends and family for your words of encouragement and positive thoughts.

Our OHSU Trip

We have just returned after my mom's follow-up appointment at OHSU with the neuro-surgeon. He said that things looked good and that she may proceed on with treatment! We are very excited to know that with chemotherapy and radiation treatment, Mom's life will be prolonged! We are fortunate to have modern medicine available to us!
We have great support in family and friends. I believe that I could call on 100 (maybe more) different people day or night and have help within minutes. People have been so good to us.
Mom's first words when she found out about possible treatment was that she would be able to spend more time with her "babies". Of course she is referring to her grandchildren! (What am I, chopped liver?) Anyway, spirits around our house are good and we all feel that we have received a special Christmas gift.

Our Family Is Staying Strong!

Right smack in the middle of the most fun time of year, The Rooney/Dutton family has had a slight setback. My mom (Barbara) was diagnosed with agressive grade 4 adenocarcinoma of the lungs, both sides of the brain and the adrenal glands. As I'm sure you can imagine, this has been extremely difficult for all involved. Mom underwent brain surgery the day after diagnosis to de-bulk part of the mass that was applying pressure and weakening the left side of her body. She has recovered from that and is now getting stronger every day. She started physical therapy yesterday and will continue to do that until our trip to OHSU to meet with the neuro surgeon and the oncology team. At that time, we will find out if and what treatment is available for this type of cancer. Please think of our family as we travel up and down I-5.
